What to expect
Your tour begins with pickup from your central Phnom Penh hotel (hotel pick up for morning tour from 8.00am to 8.45 according the location of your hotel or from 1.30pm to 2.15pm for afternoon tour) and a transfer to Prison S21.
Travelling aboard a comfortable air-conditioned tour bus, listen to the pre-recorded English commentary along the way, offering some background information on the prison. On arrival, your English speaking tour assistant will show you where to go to purchase your tickets (own expense $5/person, or $3 for under 18 with ID), after which you will have 1-hour and 15-minute to explore independently.
Audio guides are available in 8 languages at the museum for $3 per person (the audio guide is in 2 versions, you will take the short version which is about 50 minutes and is printed in RED numbers or an in-house guide can be hired for USD $2/person for 45 minute tour (we would suggest you to take the in-house guide service if it is available, but availability of in-house guide is not guaranteed because number of guides is limited). Spend time discovering the harrowing truths of the prison, a former high school that was transformed into a prison under the Khmer Rouge regime, and is now home to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. The prison is composed by 4 buildings, and there are different exhibition on different floors or rooms. Two prison survivors sometimes will come to the museum and talk to the visitors.
After meeting back up with the tour assistant at the museum entrance, continue on the around 30-40 minute drive to the Killing Fields. Along the way, a documentary about the Khmer Rouge will be played on the bus offering an important insight into the events that took place during the Khmer Rouge regime.
Before arrival, the tour assistant will collect the entry fee and audio guide fee on the bus in advance, therefor on arrival, you can start the tour strait away, no need to wait a long queue to get the tickets. Entry fee is $3/person. Audio guides in 15 languages are also available at The Killing Fields for $3.
You will have another 1 hour and 15 minutes for your self-guided visit.
As the written information is very limited at the Killing Fields, we recommend you to take the audio guide. It only costs you a cup of coffee in your country.
If you take the trip in the morning, you will be back to your hotel by 1pm-1:30pm; and if you like to be dropped off at riverside where you want to visit the royal palace, silver pagoda and national museum, you can just tell the tour assistant, our driver is very happy to drop you off there for your convenience.
If you take the trip in the afternoon, you will be back to your hotel by 6:30pm; and if you like to be dropped off at the riverside where you want to spend the evening or visit the Night Market, just tell the tour assistant.
